ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Another Bellator undercard stolen by Alexandre Bezerra.

For the third time in three months, the 23-year-old Brazilian put on a standout performance on one of the company's bills, this time stopping Scott Heckman in the second round of their 147-pound contest at Bellator 49 at Caesars Atlantic City.

In the opening round, the former East Stroudsburg University wrestler took the Brazilian to the mat on occasion, but couldn't hold him there and was soundly outstruck on the feet by the Sao Paulo native's boxing.

“He couldn't take me down. The strategy was exactly what happened in the fight,” Bezerra told Sherdog.com following the bout. “He would get tired trying to take me down, and when he got tired, I would go for it and take him down. That was the gameplan. I wasn't going to let him go.”

In the second, Bezerra did exactly that. He dispensed with striking, slamming Heckman to the ground, taking his back and tearing into him with heavy punches until referee Gasper Oliver was forced to rescue the Bangor, Penn., fighter 98 seconds into the round.

Bezerra, who resides in Elkins Park, N.J., moves to 11-1 with the win, with his last three victories coming inside the Bellator cage.

Roberts submitted Van Artsdalen.
The other undercard gem of the night was Palmerton, Penn.,’s Joel Roberts, who overcame early adversity to choke Brylan Van Artsdalen out cold in round two.

Roberts was smacked with heavy punches inside in the first round, his head snapping back continuously. However, as the round wound down, a big left hand led to Roberts grabbing a guillotine that forewarned of the submission skills that would take Van Artsdalen out.

In the second, Van Artsdalen dove into Roberts’ open guard with punches, only to eat a vicious upkick. Much like Ivan Salaverry on Joe Riggs, Roberts quickly locked up a tight triangle that put Van Artsdalen to sleep
at 1:47 of the second round, earning his fourth straight win.

“I caught him with an upkick underneath the jaw. I was just waiting for one of his arms to come through on one of his punches and I got it,” Roberts said after the win. “Once I got it locked up I knew it was a matter of keeping it sunk and keeping it tight. I knew I had plenty of time.”

Karavackas flattened Maynard.
New Jersey-based Lithuanian Giedrius Karavackasearned an impressive come-from-behind win of his own, knocking out Norfolk, Va.,’s LeVon Maynard in the third round.

The Lithuanian judoka was dropped by a heavy right hook in the first round and was slow to work his way back into the fight, as his kicking offense didn't show effect and he couldn't hold Maynard down.

In the third, Maynard shot in for a double-leg while Karavackas kicked, shooting straight into a flush knee that dropped him on his face. Karavackas swarmed, boxing his foe’s ears until referee Donnie Carolei stopped the bout at 1:32 of the final frame.

Anyanwu outslugged Dudley.
At 150 pounds, Kurt Pellegrino student Lester Caslowoutlasted BJJ black belt James Jones, in part due to injury. Just 15 seconds into the second frame, a Caslow right caused Jones to step back awkwardly, tweaking his right knee. Caslow pounced with punches to force Gasper Oliver to stop the bout just 15 seconds into the round.

In the evening's heavyweight opener, Azunna Anyanwu ended his fight with J.A. Dudley with fireworks, as Philadelphia's “Zulu” moved to 4-0 with a series of hooks and straights that finished the fight at 4:16 of the second round.

MMA Analysis: Alex Caceres vs. Jim Hettes at UFC on Versus

Source: http://www.opposingviews.com/

By MMA Valor on Aug 3, 2011
August must be the month of injuries of the UFC! The UFC on Versus 5 undercard bout between Alex Caceres and Leonard Garcia had been reshuffled following an undisclosed injury to Garcia. Stepping in to face Caceres will be undefeated UFC newcomer Jim Hettes, who recently inked a deal with the promotion.

Hettes (8-0) was actually look at by the promotion last year but was unable to sign a contract due to obligations with another promotion. The Pennsylvania based fighting has a Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu background, having finished all of his fights via submission. A former Pennsylvania Cage fights Series and MASS featherweight champion, Hettes is coming off a second round submission victory against Jacob Kirwan less than three weeks ago.
Caceres or “Bruce Leroy” as he was known on the 12th season of the Ultimate Fighter is coming of a quick submission loss to Mackens Semerzier last March in his UFC debut. The always smiling Caceres made it to the quarterfinals on the show but was unable to fight on the finale due to injury. Caceres comes into this bout on shaky ground though, having lost his UFC debut and only winning one of his last four fights.

Both featherweights will come into the bout looking for their first UFC win, but Caceres has already experienced the bright lights on the big stage once before. Both come in with eight professional bouts, but it is Hettes that has accomplished more in those limited bouts.
The Caceres vs. Hettes undercard bout is expected to stream live on Facebook on August 14th. UFC on Versus 5 will be the first show in the state of Wisconsin for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and will take place at the Bradley Center.

Hettes signs big-league deal MMA deal

Article from The Citizens Voice www.citizensvoice.com

by Jonathan Bombulie (staff writer)

Jim Hettes got the call to the big leagues Thursday.

The undefeated featherweight from Swoyersville signed a four-fight deal with Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championships.

The UFC, with its national television exposure and big-arena pay-per-view cards, is considered the major leagues of mixed martial arts.

"It's an honor for sure, but at the same time, I haven't accomplished anything yet," Hettes said. "I have to train even harder. I have to put in even more hours at the gym. I can't sit back and think I've made it."

Those around him didn't recieve the news as calmly as Hettes did.

"My family went nuts," he said. "They really took the news to heart. They've been celebrating ever since."

Hettes, a 24-year old Wyoming Valley West graduate, had his first MMA bout as an amateur in 2007. He's 8-0 since turning pro in June 2009.

Last Saturday, Hettes defeated Jacob Kirwan via triangle choke in the second round of the main event of MASS Inauguration, the first MMA event held at the Mohegn Sun Arena.

Hettes said he was in line to be a late replacement on a UFC card several times recently - including a tentative agreement fight on the Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale last fall - but the deals always fell through for one reason or another. He won't have to worry about that any more.

"It's a relief," he said.

Hettes said he does not yet know when or where his next fight will be.

"It's a complete grab bag at this point," he said. "All I can do is wait and hear what's next."

NY MMA Bill Overwhelmingly Passes Committee Vote

by Justin Klein source: mmapayout.com

New York Senate Bill 1707A, i.e. the bill to authorize mixed martial arts in New York, overwhelmingly passed the Senate Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation, by a vote of 13-1 this morning.

If last year is any indication, the bill will now go straight to the full Senate for a vote.

The overwhelming support for the bill is a good sign and so is the fact that the bill is through the Tourism Committee this early in the legislative session, i.e. approximately three (3) months before the bill was referred out of the Tourism Committee last year.

While I hesitate to read too much into anything when it comes to New York politics, in my view, the early action on the bill in the Senate (in particular, before the budget process has been resolved) is a step in the right direction.

By the time the bill passed the Senate last year it was near the end of the legislative session, which did not give proponents of legalizing MMA in the Assembly too much time to use that leverage and publicity to work on pushing the bill in the Assembly.

Now, however, if the Senate can pass the bill in April or even early-May, there will be more time to force the issue in the assembly.

If this happens, I think the New York grassroots movement can be a critical force by getting the issue on the radar of representatives (who are not otherwise sponsors of the bill or aware of the issue) up in Albany.

Meanwhile Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta, Frankie Edgar, Matt Hamill, Renzo Gracie, and and local NYU fight Doctor Todd Schlifstein meet with Legislators today to urge the regulation of mixed martial arts (MMA) in New York and highlight the millions annually in revenue the sport would bring to New York.Renzo Gracie, Frankie Edgar, Matt Hamill and Dana White will then address the media and hold an MMA community expo for teens from Albany’s Journeyman Wrestling School at the Washington Avenue Armory. Albany area youths from the local Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, Arbor Hill Community Center and Boy Scouts will attend.
