ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Another Bellator undercard stolen by Alexandre Bezerra.

For the third time in three months, the 23-year-old Brazilian put on a standout performance on one of the company's bills, this time stopping Scott Heckman in the second round of their 147-pound contest at Bellator 49 at Caesars Atlantic City.

In the opening round, the former East Stroudsburg University wrestler took the Brazilian to the mat on occasion, but couldn't hold him there and was soundly outstruck on the feet by the Sao Paulo native's boxing.

“He couldn't take me down. The strategy was exactly what happened in the fight,” Bezerra told Sherdog.com following the bout. “He would get tired trying to take me down, and when he got tired, I would go for it and take him down. That was the gameplan. I wasn't going to let him go.”

In the second, Bezerra did exactly that. He dispensed with striking, slamming Heckman to the ground, taking his back and tearing into him with heavy punches until referee Gasper Oliver was forced to rescue the Bangor, Penn., fighter 98 seconds into the round.

Bezerra, who resides in Elkins Park, N.J., moves to 11-1 with the win, with his last three victories coming inside the Bellator cage.

Roberts submitted Van Artsdalen.
The other undercard gem of the night was Palmerton, Penn.,’s Joel Roberts, who overcame early adversity to choke Brylan Van Artsdalen out cold in round two.

Roberts was smacked with heavy punches inside in the first round, his head snapping back continuously. However, as the round wound down, a big left hand led to Roberts grabbing a guillotine that forewarned of the submission skills that would take Van Artsdalen out.

In the second, Van Artsdalen dove into Roberts’ open guard with punches, only to eat a vicious upkick. Much like Ivan Salaverry on Joe Riggs, Roberts quickly locked up a tight triangle that put Van Artsdalen to sleep
at 1:47 of the second round, earning his fourth straight win.

“I caught him with an upkick underneath the jaw. I was just waiting for one of his arms to come through on one of his punches and I got it,” Roberts said after the win. “Once I got it locked up I knew it was a matter of keeping it sunk and keeping it tight. I knew I had plenty of time.”

K. Mills

Karavackas flattened Maynard.
New Jersey-based Lithuanian Giedrius Karavackasearned an impressive come-from-behind win of his own, knocking out Norfolk, Va.,’s LeVon Maynard in the third round.

The Lithuanian judoka was dropped by a heavy right hook in the first round and was slow to work his way back into the fight, as his kicking offense didn't show effect and he couldn't hold Maynard down.

In the third, Maynard shot in for a double-leg while Karavackas kicked, shooting straight into a flush knee that dropped him on his face. Karavackas swarmed, boxing his foe’s ears until referee Donnie Carolei stopped the bout at 1:32 of the final frame.

Keith Mills

Anyanwu outslugged Dudley.
At 150 pounds, Kurt Pellegrino student Lester Caslowoutlasted BJJ black belt James Jones, in part due to injury. Just 15 seconds into the second frame, a Caslow right caused Jones to step back awkwardly, tweaking his right knee. Caslow pounced with punches to force Gasper Oliver to stop the bout just 15 seconds into the round.

In the evening's heavyweight opener, Azunna Anyanwu ended his fight with J.A. Dudley with fireworks, as Philadelphia's “Zulu” moved to 4-0 with a series of hooks and straights that finished the fight at 4:16 of the second round.

MMA Analysis: Alex Caceres vs. Jim Hettes at UFC on Versus

Source: http://www.opposingviews.com/

By MMA Valor on Aug 3, 2011
August must be the month of injuries of the UFC! The UFC on Versus 5 undercard bout between Alex Caceres and Leonard Garcia had been reshuffled following an undisclosed injury to Garcia. Stepping in to face Caceres will be undefeated UFC newcomer Jim Hettes, who recently inked a deal with the promotion.

Hettes (8-0) was actually look at by the promotion last year but was unable to sign a contract due to obligations with another promotion. The Pennsylvania based fighting has a Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu background, having finished all of his fights via submission. A former Pennsylvania Cage fights Series and MASS featherweight champion, Hettes is coming off a second round submission victory against Jacob Kirwan less than three weeks ago.
Caceres or “Bruce Leroy” as he was known on the 12th season of the Ultimate Fighter is coming of a quick submission loss to Mackens Semerzier last March in his UFC debut. The always smiling Caceres made it to the quarterfinals on the show but was unable to fight on the finale due to injury. Caceres comes into this bout on shaky ground though, having lost his UFC debut and only winning one of his last four fights.

Both featherweights will come into the bout looking for their first UFC win, but Caceres has already experienced the bright lights on the big stage once before. Both come in with eight professional bouts, but it is Hettes that has accomplished more in those limited bouts.
The Caceres vs. Hettes undercard bout is expected to stream live on Facebook on August 14th. UFC on Versus 5 will be the first show in the state of Wisconsin for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and will take place at the Bradley Center.

Hettes signs big-league deal MMA deal

Article from The Citizens Voice www.citizensvoice.com

by Jonathan Bombulie (staff writer)

Jim Hettes got the call to the big leagues Thursday.

The undefeated featherweight from Swoyersville signed a four-fight deal with Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championships.

The UFC, with its national television exposure and big-arena pay-per-view cards, is considered the major leagues of mixed martial arts.

"It's an honor for sure, but at the same time, I haven't accomplished anything yet," Hettes said. "I have to train even harder. I have to put in even more hours at the gym. I can't sit back and think I've made it."

Those around him didn't recieve the news as calmly as Hettes did.

"My family went nuts," he said. "They really took the news to heart. They've been celebrating ever since."

Hettes, a 24-year old Wyoming Valley West graduate, had his first MMA bout as an amateur in 2007. He's 8-0 since turning pro in June 2009.

Last Saturday, Hettes defeated Jacob Kirwan via triangle choke in the second round of the main event of MASS Inauguration, the first MMA event held at the Mohegn Sun Arena.

Hettes said he was in line to be a late replacement on a UFC card several times recently - including a tentative agreement fight on the Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale last fall - but the deals always fell through for one reason or another. He won't have to worry about that any more.

"It's a relief," he said.

Hettes said he does not yet know when or where his next fight will be.

"It's a complete grab bag at this point," he said. "All I can do is wait and hear what's next."

NY MMA Bill Overwhelmingly Passes Committee Vote

by Justin Klein source: mmapayout.com

New York Senate Bill 1707A, i.e. the bill to authorize mixed martial arts in New York, overwhelmingly passed the Senate Standing Committee on Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation, by a vote of 13-1 this morning.

If last year is any indication, the bill will now go straight to the full Senate for a vote.

The overwhelming support for the bill is a good sign and so is the fact that the bill is through the Tourism Committee this early in the legislative session, i.e. approximately three (3) months before the bill was referred out of the Tourism Committee last year.

While I hesitate to read too much into anything when it comes to New York politics, in my view, the early action on the bill in the Senate (in particular, before the budget process has been resolved) is a step in the right direction.

By the time the bill passed the Senate last year it was near the end of the legislative session, which did not give proponents of legalizing MMA in the Assembly too much time to use that leverage and publicity to work on pushing the bill in the Assembly.

Now, however, if the Senate can pass the bill in April or even early-May, there will be more time to force the issue in the assembly.

If this happens, I think the New York grassroots movement can be a critical force by getting the issue on the radar of representatives (who are not otherwise sponsors of the bill or aware of the issue) up in Albany.

Meanwhile Dana White, Lorenzo Fertitta, Frankie Edgar, Matt Hamill, Renzo Gracie, and and local NYU fight Doctor Todd Schlifstein meet with Legislators today to urge the regulation of mixed martial arts (MMA) in New York and highlight the millions annually in revenue the sport would bring to New York.Renzo Gracie, Frankie Edgar, Matt Hamill and Dana White will then address the media and hold an MMA community expo for teens from Albany’s Journeyman Wrestling School at the Washington Avenue Armory. Albany area youths from the local Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, Arbor Hill Community Center and Boy Scouts will attend.

Manager optomistic on Royce Gracie's UFC return, negotiations ongoing

Source: MMAjunkie.com by Steven Marrocco on Mar 11, 2011

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has given fans a voice in deciding who fights at "UFC: Rio," and the promotion has offered 33 Brazilians to choose from.
No. 34 could be a lock.

Three-time UFC tournament champion and UFC Hall of Famer Royce Gracie (14-3-3 MMA, 11-1-2 UFC) is in continuing negotiations with the promotion to appear in a retirement fight at the Brazilian event, which is expected to take place Aug. 27 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

Mike Kogan, the U.S. representative for the Japan-based Fighting and Entertainment Group (FEG) and Gracie's longtime manager, today informed MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) of the news.

Although negotiations are far from over, Kogan said he and Gracie are talking directly with UFC president Dana White and UFC executive Lorenzo Fertitta about the prospect of bringing the 44-year-old MMA legend back into the octagon one last name against a specific – but undisclosed – opponent.

"I think we're going to make a deal," Kogan said. "We have plenty of time, so there's really no problems. It's just a matter of getting it nailed down.

"The manager said his client has talked of a retirement fight for the past year and felt "UFC: Rio" was a natural fit. He said the potential fight could take place at welterweight, middleweight, or a catchweight between the two divisions.

"I think it will create a lot of interest and a lot of [expletive]-talking," Kogan said of the proposed fight. "But that happens with everything Royce has done.

"White did not immediately respond when contacted by MMAjunkie.com for comment.

Gracie hasn't fought professionally since June 2007 when he fought fellow legend Kazushi Sakuraba at K-1 Dynamite!! USA in a rematch of an epic, no time-limits bout in the finals of the 2000 PRIDE grand prix. He won by unanimous decision, but the result was later marred by a positive test for steroids and subsequent suspension and fine.

That performance came one year after he returned to the UFC for the first time in 11 years to fight then-welterweight champion Matt Hughes in a non-title fight at UFC 60. Hughes dominated Gracie en route to a first-round TKO victory.

Subsequent talk from Gracie of a return to fighting has often been met by a tepid response from fans and observers who think the sport has passed him by since he dominated in the early days of the sport.

But Kogan believes those doubters are part of what will propel a successful return to the cage, whether Gracie wins or loses.

"Bottom line is this: Gracie came back and fought in the United States at UFC 60 for the first time since 1995, and he drew 650,000 pay-per-view [buys] – at the time the highest number," he said. "That's all I care about. You have your keyboard warriors; you have your white belts and blue belts who know everything that nobody else knows. They want to talk [expletive].

"It's part of being a star. We accept that, and we're very happy with it. There's no bad fan. Any fan is a good fan, so long as you can draw emotion out of them. And as long as they buy a ticket or buy a pay-per-view, I don't care what their intentions are, as far as the outcome of the fight is concerned.

"That may or may not be a sentiment shared by the UFC. Kogan said Gracie will attend the UFC Expo during the weekend of UFC 129 in Toronto, and talks may or may not resume at that point.

"As of right now, we don't have a deal in place," he said. "The UFC might yank this fight altogether and be like, 'On second thought, we don't want to do it.' This is not a done deal. We're interested in fighting; we have talked about it a lot. Most of the basic terms are agreed upon. But we haven't signed.

"Brazilian MMA fans can visit UFC.com's Portuguese-language website to vote on 12 fighters they think should compete at "UFC: Rio."

UFC Top 10 Prizes fom Strikeforce Aquisition

Source: Don “The Don of MMA” Livingston... http://www.sportschatpalace.com/

A day after the big announcement of the UFC purchasing top competitor Strikeforce, the MMA world is still buzzing over the news and how it will impact the sport. The speculation is rampant across the internet as to how this deal will play out but only the masters in the grand Zuffa tower know exactly what is about to transpire. One thing is clear, the UFC went shopping and made this purchase with the intention of adding to its roster. When and how they will utilize their new toys remains the biggest mystery but let’s take a look at the who piece of that equation and see which current Strikeforce fighters were likely at the top of the Zuffa wish list when they went fighter shopping.
Here is my take on the UFC’s Top Ten:

1. Alistair Overeem: The UFC Heavyweight division was at its deepest just a short time ago but as contenders knocked each other off there are only two are currently thought of as top flight heavyweights (Champion Cain Velasquez and potential challenger Junior dos Santos). Overeem is considered by many as the top heavyweight in the world and in my opinion the only true challenger for Velasquez at this time. Overeem could challenge for the UFC belt in his Octagon debut. The biggest questions surrounding Overeem are the rumors of performance enhancing substances and his desire to compete in K-1 which will likely be prohibited in a UFC contract.

2. Nick Diaz: Diaz spent a few rocky years in the UFC before finding his stride in EliteXC and Strikeforce. Since leaving the UFC Diaz has gone on a tear and captured the Strikeforce welterweight title leaving a band of would-be challengers in his wake. The UFC would be looking for fresh challengers for dominant welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and Diaz would provide just that challenge. The Stockton Bad Boy would be the perfect foil for the squeaky clean fan-favorite in GSP and could also present a stylistic match-up that St. Pierre has yet to face during his reign.

3. Gilbert Melendez: Melendez is the Strikeforce Lightweight champion with a well-rounded skill set that would suit him well in the stacked UFC Lightweight division. While not flashy or boastful, Melendez brings a rugged in-your-face style that could present problems to the upper echelon of the UFC lightweight division. The UFC lightweight division is completely stacked and Melendez would need to win at least two high-profile bouts before getting a title shot.

4. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza: The Brazilian submission wizard has continued to hone his game since arriving on the Strikeforce scene and in addition to winning the Strikeforce middleweight championship Jacare has adeptly improved his stand-up game. Souza’s game is now well-rounded and he would be a solid challenger to anyone on the UFC middleweight roster. The only issue in the Jacare move to the UFC would be that his friend Anderson Silva currently owns the UFC Middleweight strap. Silva has previously ventured into the light-heavyweight division and that move would open the door for Jacare to advance within the UFC Middleweight division.

5. Antonio “Big Foot” Silva: Silva is the former EliteXC heavyweight champion and recently put a beating on the once invincible Fedor Emelianenko in his last bout. It was a convincing victory over a legendary figure in the world of MMA. Silva is a giant man who cuts weight to reach the 265 pound limit and with his BJJ black belt and improved striking Silva would be a stern test for any heavyweight in the world.

6. Tim Kennedy: In addition to being a world class fighter, Kennedy is a decorated military veteran with designs on continuing his service once his MMA career is over. The UFC has been very active with the Armed Forces in raising money and awareness and Kennedy would be a great addition to the roster. This is not to imply that the UFC support for the troops has been an act but let’s face it, a hero like Kennedy who also has top flight MMA skills is a great selling card for the organization. Kennedy would need several big wins in order to get into the UFC title picture but he certainly would be a solid contender.

Checkout http://www.reprizentfightwear.com/ for MMA Clothing...

7. Dan Henderson: Yes, I know, been there… done that. Even at an relatively advanced age Henderson showed he still has some gas in his tank with a thrilling knockout of Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante to win the Strikeforce light-heavyweight title. The UFC brass felt Henderson’s skills had diminished when it came time to negotiate a new contract and the talks became contentious. The UFC would love to prove they were right and have one of their top light-heavyweights defeat Hendo.

8. Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal: Lawal is the former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion who made a meteoric rise in his brief MMA career. Lawal is a world class wrestler with a tireless desire to improve his MMA game. King Mo has a flamboyant personality but is also a very cerebral fighter who has broken down fight match-ups for FIGHT! Magazine. A knee injury in his title loss to Feijao Cavalcante has sidelined Lawal since last August but look for Lawal to return stronger than ever. Lawal’s skills and personality would make him a marketable fighter in the UFC.

9. Fedor Emelianenko: Fedor once ruled the heavyweight MMA world in going unbeaten for nearly ten years. Despite two recent losses, the Russian sambo fighter possesses the skills to win the fight from anywhere and has displayed those skills throughout the years. The motivation for the UFC to bring Fedor into the fold would be purely selfish as they would like to portray the fading Russian star as a fighter who was overrated all along. Fedor would get no “tune up” fight as the UFC would try to prove its overrated point.

10. Jason “Mayhem” Miller: The host of MTV’s Bully Beatdown is also a rock solid middleweight fighter who once challenged for the Strikeforce title. Miller had a brief stint in the UFC, losing a one-sided unanimous decision to an emerging Georges St. Pierre. Mayhem’s outlandish personality and tough fighting style would make him a fan favorite among UFC fans. While he may never challenge for a UFC belt, Miller would fill the role of gate-keeper perfectly with his skills and personality.

Honorable Mention: Shinya Aoki, Gegard Mousasi, Robbie Lawler, Feijao Cavalcante, Sergei Kharitonov, Evangelista Santos.

8 Reasons Why You Should Follow the UFC

By Ryan J. Tartaglia
Published: Friday, March 11, 2011
Source: The Suffolk Voice www.thesuffolkvoice.net

Georges St. Pierre lands a kick, and his kicks have brought him to the top of UFC
In a sports world constantly filled with player-owner feuds (NFL), athlete conglomeration, team contraction (NBA), and celebrity dating (MLB), the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has been able to assert itself as one of the most interactive, powerful sports businesses not just in America, but the world.
With the likelihood of lockouts in the NFL and NBA, sports fanatics will need a sport they can rely on; one that excites their interest without wondering if their athletes will strike. UFC is that sport. With that, here are my 8 reasons to why you should start following the UFC.

8. The Octagon
People acknowledge the UFC based on its unique fight setting. Fights take place inside an eight-sided enclosed black vinyl fence otherwise known as "The Octagon". The setting is unique, and unlike a boxing ring the Octagon can be a fighters tool.

7. Pride Over Money
Many people might think UFC has the best fighters in the world because their paychecks are massive. That is not the case. Only a few fighters like Georges St. Pierre make over a million dollars a year, with the majority of income coming from their endorsements. You get paid on how you perform, and if you don't perform you are going to get cut. The fighters in the UFC fight for pride and respect, because once you earn pride and respect that is when the money is earned.

6. UFC-WEC Merger
Before the New Year rang in, UFC President Dana White declared a merger with another mixed-martial arts company, World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). The WEC specialized their fights in the lightweight, featherweight, and bantamweight divisions. WEC had been home to some of the most entertaining, high-octane fights in MMA history. UFC taking over those classes brings added depth to an already loaded UFC roster.

5. Only Seven
While I respect the sport of boxing (My grandfather is a boxing commissioner), I cannot help but get confused with all of the championship belts. In the sport of boxing, there are four belts for seventeen different weight classes. That is a total of 68 belts. It can get a bit confusing if you are an average fan of boxing, like myself. You can't really get a sense of who the top fighter in the world is. In the UFC, they only hold 7 championship belts (one for each weight division), making it much easier for the average fan to keep track of.

4. Depth in Fighters
While watching a UFC pay-per-view, you can always make sure of one thing: you are watching the greatest mixed-martial artists in the world of combat sports. From the skilled veterans of Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre, Jon Fitch, and Rashad Evans to the up and comers of Jon Jones, Cain Velasquez, Junior Dos Santos and Anthony Pettis, the UFC is loaded with at least five of the best fighters in each weight division.

3. Element of Surprise
The greatest thing about a UFC match is the fact that you don't know how it's going to end. A knockout or a kimura could happen when you least expect it. Maybe you have no idea what a kimura is, but I guarantee once you see the submission take place inside the Octagon, you'll just be thinking, "I didn't see that coming. How the hell did he just do that!?!"

2. The Ultimate Fighter/Free Televised Fight Cards
In 2005, the UFC popularity grew immensely thanks to a new reality TV series titled, The Ultimate Fighter. The show is a mixed-martial arts competition where the winner earns a contract with the UFC. The Ultimate Fighter is now entering its 14th season, where the finale is held live on Spike TV. Due to the success of The Ultimate Fighter, the UFC has produced over 35 free televised fight cards in the past 6 years. So if you are a college kid like me with little cash in your wallet, you can guarantee to watch a pay-per-view quality card on national television.

1. UFC President Dana White
UFC President Dana White may be the most controversial president in sports history, but that is what makes him great. What makes Dana a fantastic president is the way he interacts with fans. He is the type to hand out free tickets the night of the pay-per-view match, not because they didn't sell out, but because he loves satisfying the fan. Although White never graduated college, he has turned the UFC into a million dollar business. If a fighter did not perform to his expectations, he'll cut him on the spot. If White feels that the result from the judges was not what actually happened, he will give the fans a rematch. So, while NFL owners are seeking out for their own interests, Dana White will be seeking yours.

UFC 128 Shogun vs Jones. Preview and Predictions

From www.bleacherreport.com , by Cody Slovensky (Member) on March 10, 2011 - Newark, New Jersey

On March 19, 2011, UFC 128 will take place. In this bout, we will see fights that have a lot riding on them. Future title contenders will be discovered, there's the possibility of the retirement of a legend and a few people may lose their jobs. This also may be one of the most exciting events of the year. Here are the main card breakdowns.

Nate "The Great" Marquardt vs Yoshihiro "Sexyama" Akiyama
Akiyama is arguably the best Judo practitioner in the UFC, while Marquardt is one of the best wrestlers. On paper, this is a close fight and truthfully, with a loss either could be cut from the organization.
Akiyama is very marketable in UFC's quest towards Japan, while Marquardt, on the other hand, isn't too high on Dana White's list of favorite fighters. In this fight, expect both to lay it all on the line, as both are warriors and this fight is truly a toss up.
Expect Nate to capitalize with his wrestling and for Akiyama to gas out by the mid-second to early third-round.
My pick: Nate Marquardt

Jim Miller vs Kamal Shalorus
Both of these fighters are very well rounded, as Shalorus has the better stand up, while Miller has the better ground game. The winner of this fight will really be in the mix for a future title shot. Miller is 19-2, and his only 2 losses were to current Lightweight champion Frank Edgar and number 1 contender Gray Maynard. Shalorus has never fought anyone that is as good as Miller, but he still has a good chance to win. Miller is ready to get the title shot that he believe he deserves. A win for Miller will go a long way for him. Expect this fight to be mostly on the ground. It should be a great fight.
My pick: Jim Miller

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs Brendan "The Hybrid" Schaub
The fight of legend vs up-and-comer. Both have good striking and ground games. A loss could mean retirement for Cro Cop, since Mirko has been winning fights, but it seems that he is afraid to pull the trigger. It would be amazing to see one more left high kick from Cro Cop. Will we see it? Hopefully we can, as Cro Cop says the "fire" is back.
Schaub needs a win like this on his resume. His striking is good, and his ground game has improved tons. Expect this fight to stay standing. If Cro Cop has his "fire" back then he is almost unstoppable. Stylistically this is Cro Cop's type of fight.
Will he capitalize on this opportunity? I truly hope so.
My pick: Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic(If the fire is back)

Urijah Faber vs Eddie Wineland
Faber is an outstanding wrestler training with team Alpha Male, he is the former WEC Featherweight champion. Wineland was the first ever WEC Bantamweight champion, and he is currently on a four fight winning streak.
This is a win that Wineland would love to have on his resume. The winner of this fight will face champion Dominic Cruz for the Bantamweight championship. In his past two fights, Wineland has won the knockout of the night bonus, with his most recent involving an amazing slam against Ken Stone.
Faber is the fan favorite and always puts on great performances. His most recent win was his debut at bantamweight against Takeya Mizugaki, in which he won via Rear Naked Choke. Faber also holds a win over the current Bantanweight champion.
This fight will show who the better wrestler is as well as who has the better striking. This has the makes of a solid war, with the edge going towards Faber. Wineland needs to use his strength to his advantage, but if not, Faber will capitalize.
I don't see this fight going to the judges.
My pick: Urijah Faber

Main Event: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (c) vs Jon "Bones" Jones
This could be fight of the year.
Shogun has beat the who's who of the Light Heavyweight division, while Jones has dominated every opponent he has faced.
It seems like the hype may be getting to Jones' head. In recent interviews he has said that he has already won the fight, he will submit Shogun, and that he will clinch with Shogun. That's good to have confidence, but if you say bold statements like that, you better be able to back them up.
Shogun has faced some of the best strikers in the sport and has never been knocked out and Jones has never had his chin tested. A loss for either guy will not hurt them at all, it will just prove who is the best fighter in the Light Heavyweight division. Jones has never been in a fight this big before, though in every performance, he seems to get better.
Shogun is coming off of an injury so we truly don't know which Shogun we will see. Will it be the unbeatable man that ran through everyone in Pride, or will it be the man that isn't himself that showed up against Forrest Griffin?
We will find out next Saturday night.
I could see Jones winning this fight with his athleticism, and Shogun could win this fight with his outstanding stand up. I could see Shogun getting one of Jones' legs and locking up a heel hook. I personally cannot see Shogun getting knocked out.
This should be a good back and fourth fight. Expect some clinch work, where both men are very strong. This fight is a true toss up, where I am definitely leaning towards the veteran in this fight.
I truly can't wait!
My pick: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua

Overall this event has the potential to be an A+ type of event, but we will have to see to find out. Here are my other picks for the event. Luis Artur Cane, Dan Miller, Joseph Benavidez, Edson Barboza Jr., Mike Pyle, and Eric Koch.

UFC 129 Will Air One Hour Earlier

Photo by Josh Hedges, Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Article from http://www.bloodyelbow.com/

Those of you who have been complaining that UFC main events start after your bedtime, Dana White has heard your pleas. The UFC has announced that UFC 129 will begin a full hour earlier than normal. With UFC 129 preliminary fights on Spike TV and likely on Facebook too, fans intent on catching all the action will have to make early dinner plans.

Those who fear that the main event between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields will be a snooze-fest have one less excuse should they doze off during a lull in the action.

Mike Chiapetta reports that it might not just be a one-time deal:

...The UFC is quietly contemplating a change to move up the start times of its pay-per-broadcasts one hour, MMA Fighting las learned.

No Final decision has been yet been made, though a source in the organization has confirmed to MMA Fighting that they are "considering the move for all events."

Two sources confirmed that at least one date will definitely be impacted. The change will be in play for the first time at April's massive UFC 129 event in Toronto which will take place on April 30. On that night, the pay-per-view telecast will begin at 9pm ET/6pm PT, one hour ahead of its usual time...

I'm curious if the UFC is doing this as a work-around against Bellator. The upstart promotion is airing events live on Spike TV's fellow Viacom-owned channel MTV2 and has announced plans to start earlier on UFC nights. With the UFC making so many preliminary fights available so early, Bellator will be in a pinch. I wonder if MTV2 is interested in airing live MMA at 6pm ET?

UPDATE: BE reader Rich Hansen points out that there won't be a Bellator event on March 30th. Nevermind.

Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson Results and Recap

from www.5thround.com ...
"Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson" took place Saturday night inside the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. A pair of thrilling fights headlined Showtime's broadcast.

Women's 135-pound champion Marloes Coenen rose from the brink of defeat to unleash an Anderson Silva-esque come-from-behind victory over Liz Carmouche in the night's co-main event. Coenen was getting mauled by the 3 -to-1 underdog until she managed to wrap her lanky legs around the challenger's neck in the 4th round to force the triangle submission victory.

Dan Henderson captured the light heavyweight crown in the card's featured contest. After much back and forth action during the first 10 minutes of their championship affair, Henderson came out firing to start the third stanza.

Henderson connected on a vicious right hand that instantly dropped the Brazillian on his face. The former PrideFC champ quickly pounced on Feijao and unloaded a few more bombs on the ground before the fight was finally called.

Speaking of finishes, Strikeforce produced yet another night of spectacular action. It's becoming old hat for the San Jose, California based promotion, as eight of the 10 fights on Saturday did not involve the three officials sitting cage-side.

The two contests that went to the cards resulted in lopsided unanimous decision verdicts.

Bisping to be punished for UFC 127 antics

Photo: Getty Images

According to a report by MMA Fighting's Mike Chiapetta, Michael Bisping will be punished for his alleged spitting incident this past Saturday at UFC 127 in Australia.

Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White stated that Bisping will receive a yet-to-be-determined reprimand for his allegedly spitting at opponent Jorge Rivera's boxing coach, Matt Phinney, after his second round TKO victory.

The incident was caught on film, although with Phinney situated off camera. Bisping has denied accusations, saying he was "spitting on the ground to let him know what I thought of him."
